The Chrysalis

Posted in monarch caterpillars, monarch chrysalis by Sarah Skeen on July 26, 2007

I took Lily outside to play today and when I came in an hour later Chubby had become a chrysalis! So, I had always thought that a butterfly caterpillar spins a cacoon but I was wrong. Once they hang upside down they shed their last layer of skin and what is underneath is the chrysalis. It’s really amazing! Once that last layer of skin is gone it takes about an hour for the chrysalis to harden and until it’s hardened it’s a jelly like texture.
